Yes, even with DBS there is fine print! More likely than not, there is probably more than you thought. The doctors try to explain all the dos & don’ts, and answer all your questions before surgery, but we are usually so overwhelmed that we forget. I tried to make a list, and my wife was with me to cover what I forgot, but there was some stuff that I just didn’t think of!
I have no complaints whatsoever, but looking back I should have done a little more research! I think I was so excited about getting my DBS procedure that I overlooked some of the “fine print”! I was eager to return to my pre-Parkinson’s “normal”, and get on with life!
So, I was aware of the issues of MRIs, airport screening, advising surgical physicians of the DBS, and using caution when participating in a physical, recreational or sporting activity, patients should protect the neurostimulator area from trauma.
But here are a few items that are not allowed (Or that need special attention) that I never even thought to inquire about: arc welding, massages therapy, chiropractic treatments, radiation therapy, lithotripsy within 6 inches of the neurostimulator, use of a TENS devise, close proximity of some household items like refrigerator door magnets, hot tubs, scuba diving, and others. Some of them make sense, but others I would not have thought of!
I have spoken to other DBS patients that were also unaware of these prohibited or restrictive items. And like me, they will not have a big impact on their lives; BUT, it’s good to know about them and be aware of the potential hazards.
I continue to research and inquire from my neurologist about things I can and cannot do.
